Tracy Elliott: Tracy's Music

Alright

(Tracy Elliott)
September 15, 2004
This song was inspired by the documentary on Ruth Ellis. It's about what we miss out on from talking and not listening. Our history is best communicated through the oral tradition as opposed to the history books in school. Go and let your grandparents tell you a story.
Alright

There goes a man without a name
But I speak to him just the same
And I offer him some change
But he just looks at me in shame
And he says
No thank you ma'am I'm doing alright
I got God's green earth and some memories
And I'm doing alright
But if you have the time to listen
I have the time to share
The many, many lessons of my life and I'm alright

There goes a woman ninety-nine
It's hard to imagine living all that time
So I try to lend a hand
But she just reaches for mine instead
And she says
No thank you ma'am I'm doing alright
I got God's blue sky and some memories
And I'm doing alright
But if you have the time to listen
I have the time to share
The many, many lessons of my life
And I'm alright

So here I am a stranger to the past
Pondering the history of me
Not knowing where I came from
Not knowing what there words would mean
When they said
No thank you ma'am we're doing alright
They had God's good grace and some memories
And they were doing alright
And if I'd had the time to listen
When they had the time to share
The many, many lessons of their lives
I'd be alright
